Tribute

Helen Janette Jenkins

Sept. 23, 1939 to Nov. 17, 2020

Helen Jenkins and her husband, Chad, have been residents of Sandy valley for 16 years. During their time there, Helen volunteered her time at the elementary school and the Senior Center. She was known for years by many of the children at school as “Gramms”. She worked in the lunch room helping to serve breakfast and she worked several seasons in the Christmas Bizarre raising money for the school’s Booster Club At the Senior Center she was one of the hard working kitchen staff that made the Saturday morning biscuits n gravy and pancake breakfasts come together. The Senior Center was a gathering place for many residents of Sandy Valley and Helen was known by most of them. She thoroughly enjoyed spending her time at the Center. Helen also baked items for “Cake Walks” and she knitted countless pot holders and baby blankets that she loved to give as gifts.

Helen was born near Yates Center, Ks on Sept 23, 1939 to Earl and Alice May Scott. She was the second born and the oldest daughter of 6 children. She grew up on a farm, got her early education in a one room school house and went to business college after high school. Helen was a brunette beauty and naturally began modeling after college.

Then in 1966 Helen married Chad Jenkins and they had 3 children together. She was loving and dedicated and successful not only with her children and marriage but also in her career. Helen was solid in her beliefs. She held steadfast with her opinions. She chose to carry the burden of others and did not complain of it.

Helen Jenkins passed gently from this world in the early evening of Nov. 17, 2020. She left behind her husband, all 3 of their children, 5 grand children, 2 brothers, 1 sister, cousins, nieces, nephews and an uncountable number of friends. She could connect with strangers as easily as life long acquaintances but always made people feel at ease.

To say that Helen will be missed is a great understatement. She was unselfish to a flaw, always choosing to put her own wants and desires aside. When most people were trying to enjoy retirement she became a care giver, a counselor, a financial advisor, a volunteer and a role model.

She is a missing piece in her family’s puzzle and the knowledge that has gone with her leaves a void that only time can fill.
