James “La La’s” Journey

In God’s Omnipotent Wisdom, Divine Love and Power, September 27, 1941 was ordained to be the spiritual ushering of the birth of James Howard Cleveland. The sixth child born to Johnny Cleveland Sr. and Dessie Royster Cleveland in Tallulah LA. James was only eleven (11) months old when his mother passed away. He was reared by his Grandmother, Emily Anthony Kiner. He had a very happy childhood, adored and obeyed his elders, and enjoyed playing with his siblings and many cousins. He attended Sunday School, Church and Public Schools in Tallulah and graduated from Ruben McCall High School in May 1960. While in High School he played basketball and sang with the choir. Immediately after graduation, James and his best friend Willie Hicks enlisted in the U.S. Navy. They were blessed to spend their 4 year tour together in Japan, Hawaii, China and in the Philippines. Their last duties was at the Naval Base in San Diego, CA where James met and married his first wife Pearl. They shared 32 years together until her death. They are the parents of 3 children, James Jr., Tomorie and Dockery. James relocated to Las Vegas in 1964 to be with his eldest sister Lucille. He joined Z.U.M.Ch. under the leadership of Rev. Dr. M. D. Bennett Sr.

He was a dutiful member, serving as a Trustee, Member of the Cook’s Club and singing in the Chancel Choir as one of the lead soloist. James was a licensed Electrician, and he worked at various jobs in Las Vegas before starting a career with Pan American and Nevada Test Site as a foreman. He retired in 2001. He met his wife Barbara at Z.U.M.Ch. and they married in 2004. James and Barbara enjoyed 18 years traveling in the United States and abroad until his health failed.
