Tribute

LLOYD A. ST. JAMES

On this day, we celebrate the life of Lloyd Augustus St. James, a fun-loving, caring, generous husband, father, grandfather, father-in-love, Godfather, brother, uncle, friend, and dedicated Jesus follower.

Lloyd was born June 14, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois, and was the fourth child of seven, born to Theodore Robert and Lois A. St. James. He grew up on the Southside in the Woodlawn neighborhood in a tight knit family and was affectionately called “Snooky” by those dearest to him. Snooky graduated from James McCosh Elementary School, Englewood High School and completed two years in Chicago Teachers College. He was baptized at Holy Cross Catholic Church and served as a full-time Youth Organizer for the Young Christian Workers until being drafted into the United States Army in 1959.

Upon completion of two years of military service, Lloyd was Honorably discharged. He began working for the Chicago Transit Authority as a Bus Operator and worked his way up the corporate ladder as a Bus Instructor, Supervisor, Assistant Bus Garage Superintendent, and retired in 1992 as Superintendent of the 103rd Street Bus Garage.

June 20, 1964, Lloyd married his childhood neighbor and “brick house,” Ethelynn Campbell. The couple was blessed with the birth of their only child, Jill Lynn in 1967. They were also blessed to share 50 years of marriage.

Lloyd and Lynn moved to Henderson, Nevada in 1997 and enjoyed retired life together. They were co-founding members of the Chicago Connection, a group of retired colleagues and friends who gathered monthly to socialize, dine, and attend local events, as well as help plan and participate in the Annual Christmas parties. As a past Chairperson and past Treasurer for the Chicago Connection, Lloyd joyfully served the members and kept everyone entertained with his witty humor.

In 2005, Lloyd accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at Mountaintop Faith Ministries in Las Vegas. In 2011, Lloyd desired to have a closer relationship with Messiah and began attending Christian Embassy Worship Center after his daughter, Jill’s ministerial ordination there. He enjoyed serving faithfully as a member of the Keenagers Senior Ministry, and as a pillar in the Men’s Ministry. He greatly loved Carey Conner, Sr., his pastor, the man who helped to deepen Lloyd’s intimacy with God. He also LOVED his CEWC church family and truly looked forward to the kind fellowship, giving out his weekly fatherly hugs and sharing his old stories with his brothers and sisters in Christ.

Pop St. James, as they affectionately call him, has never met a stranger. His infectious smile brightened everyone’s day.

The greatest memories and years of love will forever be cherished by Lloyd’s daughter, Jill Lynn St. James; his bestie/grandson, Karriem Beyah II; son-in-love, Vincent Davis; Godson, Marcus Hughley; sisters, Gwendolyn Hughes, and Eunice Smedley; sister-in-love, Marthann Campbell, and a host of nephew, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, dear friends, colleagues and church family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ethelynn Campbell St. James, brothers,  Theordore, Norman and Alan St. James and sister Winifred Hinkle.
