Ruby Young

Ruby Edith Young, 87, a much loved mother, grandmother & aunt, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2018 in Las Vegas, at Nathan Adelson Hospice.

Born in Oakland, CA to Edith & Kenneth Young, she graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts and went on to become a beloved high school teacher of commercial art, fine art and photography for over 30 years; ending her career at Ed W. Clark High School. She was proud of the awards she earned over the years, including Clark County Employee of the Month and many awards of appreciation from her high school students.  After retiring from active teaching, she continued sharing her passion for art working for the Clark county Recreation Department, as well as teaching painting for the Art League.   She was actively involved in Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority & the Nevada Retired Teachers’ Association holding leadership positions and lending her love of storytelling and writing as newsletter editor.    

Ruby is preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Kenneth Young, Donald Young (Iola Young), and Keith Young.

  Ruby is survived by her 3 daughters Kim Mandelbaum (Larry Allen) of Las Vegas, E. Lee Mandelbaum of Hayward, CA and Marcie Davies (William Davies) of Peoria, AZ, nephew Jason Young (Vicki) of Antioch, CA and nephew Stephen Thomas (Esther) of Portland, OR.

She leaves behind three wonderful grandchildren whom she loved and who loved her. Blake Allen, Anastasia Beckenstein (neé Davies) and Evan Davies were fortunate to call her “Grammy”.

Ruby generously shared her time, talents and resources with her students, family, colleagues and friends. She will be remembered as a woman of grit, wit and creativity.

She painted for as long as she could and was proud to have her last multimedia one woman show as recently as the spring of 2016 at the Spring Mountain Branch of the Clark County Library.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the special staff at Nathan Adelson Hospice for the expert and compassionate care she deserved and sends thanks to Ruby’s longtime friends for giving her a lifetime filled with love. 

No local services are planned. Ruby wants to be remembered with a smile, and wishes all who knew her to celebrate life and to live long and prosper.
